List of international chemical weapons conventions
The list of international conventions on chemical weapons mentions various international legal instruments that the outlawing of chemical weapons are used, including:
- Article 23 of the Hague Convention of 1899 and 1907,
- Article V of the treaty relating to the use of submarines and harmful gases in warfare of February 6, 1921 (not entered into force),
- the protocol on the prohibition of the use of asphyxiating, poisonous or similar gases as well as bacteriological agents in war (Geneva Protocol) of June 17, 1925,
- the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Storage and Use of Chemical Weapons and on the Destruction of Such Weapons (Chemical Weapons Convention) of April 29, 1997.
Several UN resolutions urged conflicting parties to renounce chemical weapons:
- The UN resolution 582 (1986) of 24 February 1986 noted the use of poison gas and urged both parties to the conflict Iran and Iraq to abide by the Geneva Protocol. The background was the Iraq-Iran war and the Iraqi use of chemical weapons .
- The UN resolution 612 (1988) refrain from May 9, 1988 urged Iran and Iraq, the use of chemical weapons.
In 1997, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons was established to control compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention.
