Lithogenes is a genus of armored catfish (Loricariidae)consisting of three species. The genus occurs in Venezuela inLake Valencia in the north and in the headwaters of the Orinoco in the south, and in Guyana in the Potaro in the Essequibo riverbasin. Lithogenes valencia the species found in Lake Valencia has possibly already become extinct, as the lake is heavily polluted by the discharge of sewage.
features
Lithogenes are 4.4 to 7.8 cm long. They differ from all other armored catfish by their almost unarmored body, which is the result of a reduction in the bone shields or a plesiomorphism with the sister group of armored catfish, the climbing catfish (Astroblepidae). The head is large, the head length makes up 22 to 29% of the standard length , the head width 78 to 95% of the head length. The suction mouth on the underside of the head takes up almost the entire width of the head. The teeth are two-pointed and can be symmetrical or asymmetrical.
- Fin formula : dorsal ii / 6-7, anal ii / 5-7, pectoral 8-9.
An adipose fin is present. This can be supported by an ossified spike on its front edge.
