The Lituya Glacier is a 19 km long glacier in Glacier Bay National Park in the Panhandle of Alaska (USA).
geography
The glacier's nutrient zone is on the northwest flank of Mount Wilbur in the southern Fairweather Range at an altitude of 1700 m . From there it flows in a predominantly west-southwest direction out of the mountains. It eventually reaches the Fairweather Fault and turns south-southeast. Shortly afterwards it ends at Gilbert Inlet , the northwest side bay of Lituya Bay , which opens to the open sea. The mean width of the glacier is 900 m.
Glacier development
The Lituya Glacier has been retreating more and more in recent years. Around 2010 he was at the transition from a tidal glacier to a land glacier. This means that the glacier tongue no longer reaches the sea even at high tide.
