history

As a simple girl, Liu Sanjie (In the film: 刘 iant; Liu Tiantian) had the reputation of a gifted singer. But over time she began to sing about grievances and thus openly rebelled against the landlord Mo Huairen (老莫; old Mo). This let them take part in a competition against the best singers, which Liu Sanjie won. Then the landowner ordered her to be killed, whereupon she fled with her lover. Wherever they passed, they sang the songs of their homeland and spread them all over the country. In the end, the lovers turned into larches and can stay together forever.

Liu Sanjie's story was staged in 2004 by director Zhang Yimou with more than 600 participants in the southern Chinese city of Yizhou and is a local tourist attraction. The 10,000 seat natural stage is considered the largest in the world.
