The southern highlands of Tanzania

The Livingstone Mountains or Kipengere Range are about 200 km long mountain range in southern Tanzania .

They border the Poroto Mountains in the north , rise to Mount Rungwe , form a high cliff first to the valley above Matema, then to Lake Malawi, and in the south they run out towards the Ruhuhu valley . Almost parallel to and east of the Livingstone Mountains runs the chain of the Kipengere Mountains , the highest elevation of which is Mtorwi at 2961 m and whose upstream mountain range is actually the Livingstone Mountains.

The Livingstone Mountains, especially the peaks of Jamimbi and Chamembe, rise very steeply and craggy from Lake Malawi to over 2000 to 2488 m and form a very difficult and sparsely populated high plateau with mostly open grassland and few, but very dense forests in depressions, but rugged and with very clear height differences. Nobody should move there without a compass and GPS and hardly anything is accessible for cars. The Usangu Game Reserve in the humid lowlands and the Ruaha National Park in the valley of the Ruaha River as well as the Mpanga / Kipengere Game Reserve form the so-called Igando-Igawa wildlife corridor, i.e. a hiking trail for wild animals in the dry season to the water-bearing streams and rivers of these high mountains , in which the WWF is significantly more interested than any tour operator due to the lack of any tourist infrastructure . Most of the accommodations are in mission stations, which can be a few days' march away from each other. Only a few animal species, two gazelle species and numerous birds can be found on the high plateau itself .

The climate on the plateau is harsh and knows night frosts. The introduction of European cereals has proven successful. Geologically, quartzite and sandstone predominate.

At the foot of the Livingstone Mountains, at the northern end of Lake Malawi, Matema and at the mouth of the Ruhuhu Manda , the former Wiedhafen .
