Matema is a small town at the northern end of Lake Malawi in Tanzania . According to the 2012 census, a total of 17,103 people live in the town and the surrounding region.
Matema is 90 kilometers south of Mbeya . From there it can be reached via the Poroto Mountains and the city of Tukuyu just before the border with Malawi, near Kyela via a gravel road that is currently being paved. The village can become inaccessible in the rainy season. Matema lies on a plain at the foot of the rugged Livingstone Mountains . It's a fishing village with some farming.
Two imposing mission houses of the Berlin Mission remain from the colonial days and today belong to the Lutheran diocese of Tukuyu. One of the mission houses was extensively renovated from 2008 by the German parish of North Friesland. Today it is operated by the Tanzanian-Lutheran Konde Diocese as a guest house with a bistro under the name "Matema Beach View - Lutheran Center". The guest house caters to both church and tourist guests, who can also be accommodated in one of the 25 typical African huts directly on the beach. The Lutherans also run an important regional hospital and a Bible school in Matema.
There is also a guest house of the "Kanisa ya Uinjilisti" (Mbalizi Evangelical Church) in Matema, which was built under Swiss management. The Catholic diocese also has a small guest house in Matema.
In addition to the hospital, the place has a radio station and a no longer used unpaved 900 m (grass) runway. Matema has been connected to the power grid since 2010. Mobile phone calls are possible. There are no landline connections. The church facilities have diesel generators and solar systems to bridge possible power outages.
On Fridays, the market takes place in a neighboring market square, where potters from the Ikombe peninsula opposite Matema sell their pots.
