At 2961 m, Mtorwi is the highest mountain in the southern highlands of Tanzania and the northern end of the mountain range of the Kipengere Mountains . To the west is the Kitulo Plateau and to the north the mountain range of the Poroto Mountains . Like Mount Rungwe on the other side of the Kitulo Plateau at 2960 m, Mtorwi is of volcanic origin. Both mountains became extinct as volcanoes . Both have rainfall of up to 3000 mm per year and are the highest in Tanzania.
