Lyubomir Iliev

Ljubomir Georgiev Iliew (English transcription Lyubomir Georgiev Iliev or Lubomir Georgiev Iliev , Bulgarian Любомир Георгиев Илиев , born April 20, 1913 in Veliko Tarnowo ; † June 6, 2000 ) was a Bulgarian mathematician and computer scientist.

Life

Iliew studied mathematics at the University of Sofia, graduating in 1936. He received his doctorate there in 1938 under Nikola Obreschkow (On the analytical non-continuability of power series). In 1940 he was a Humboldt fellow at the University of Munich with Constantin Caratheodory and Oskar Perron . After receiving his doctorate, he was initially a teacher and from 1941 assistant at the University of Sofia. In 1947 he became a private lecturer, in 1949 an associate professor and in 1952 as successor to L. Twchakalow professor of analysis in Sofia.

He dealt first with analysis and later also with numerical mathematics and computer science. In 1961 he became director of the first computing center in Bulgaria as part of the Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences. The first Bulgarian computer, Vitosha, was built there. In 1963 he became director of the Institute for Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences.

From 1974 to 1977 he was President of the Mathematical Union of the Balkans and from 1972 to 1977 Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Banach Center in Warsaw. He was a foreign member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1976), the Academy of Sciences of the GDR (1977) and honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences . In 1977 he received an honorary doctorate from the TU Dresden .

Honors

In 1996 he received the Computer Pioneer Award . In 1958 he became a corresponding and in 1967 full member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences .
