Ljussi Kocharyan ( Armenian Լյուսի Քոչարյանը , Russian Люси Кочарян ) is an Armenian journalist and radio presenter . For her work against gender-based violence and child abuse in her home country, she was awarded the International Women of Courage Award (IWOC) by the United States Department of State in 2020 .

Commitment and honor

Kocharyan has worked as a journalist for children with mental health problems. In Armenia she became a leading vocalist in the fight against psychological, physical and domestic violence against women and children. This includes their platform “Բռնության ձայնը / Voice of Violence” ( German voice of violence ) on Facebook . Kocharyan has successfully started an open dispute about domestic and sexual violence , which is gradually showing success in the patriarchal country. As a result, there were open attempts to threaten and discredit the journalist on the street . Kocharyan was criticized by politicians and threatened with criminal proceedings .

“Voice of Violence” is considered the Armenian #MeToo movement.

In March 2020, Ljussi Kocharyan was the first Armenian woman to receive the “ International Women of Courage Award ”. Among the twelve winners of the year were women from Bolivia , Syria and Zimbabwe . The award was presented to them by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Melania Trump on March 4, 2020 .

Kocharyan moderates two programs on the Armenian public broadcaster (Հայաստանի Հանրային Ռադիո, Hajastani Hanrajin Radio ), in which she raises questions about health, women and children.
