The Llanganates National Park is a nature reserve in Ecuador .

The park is located in the province of Napo about 50 km southwest of the provincial capital Tena . The name "Llanganates" means "beautiful mountain" in the Quechua language and refers to the 4571 m high Cerro Hermoso (Spanish: "beautiful mountain"), the highest point in the park. The national park covers an area of over 200,000 ha in several climatically different altitude zones between 602 and 4571 m above sea level. The biodiversity in the park is high.

The park is also known for the legend of the Atahualpa hidden Inca gold treasure .

ecology

Various ecological zones overlap in the park. The western area is high and can be assigned to the Páramo . Here there are lonely, deserted landscapes with high peaks and deep valleys and forms the habitat for vicuñas , llamas and alpacas . The eastern area lies on the eastern slopes of the Andes and borders the rainforests of the Amazon region . Species-rich mountain forests thrive here. This area is inaccessible due to its slopes and numerous mountain rivers.

fauna and Flora

There are over 800 species of plants in the park. The park's rare and protected animals include puma , jaguar , tapir , ocelot , various species of monkeys, capybara , spectacled bears , weasels , foxes, as well as the Andean condor , the toucan , various species of parrots, and the Andean cliff bird .
