Song of praise to the fatherland

The Song of Praise to the Motherland ( Chinese 歌唱祖國 / 歌唱祖国 , Pinyin Gēchàng zǔguǒ ) is a famous patriotic song in the People's Republic of China . Text and music were written by Wang Shen in the period immediately after the founding of the People's Republic. It is sometimes referred to as the second national anthem of China.

When Mao Zedong proclaimed the People's Republic of China on October 1st, 1949 under a sea of waving five-star red flags from Tian'anmen , he said: "The Chinese people have risen!" (against invasion and foreign exploitation). This was and remains the inspirational moment for millions of Chinese patriots to this day. Wang Shen began writing this song in late September 1950, shortly after seeing the sea of five-star red flags waving in Tian'anmen Square while preparing for the 1st State Anniversary. The text and sheet music for the song were officially published in the People's Daily on September 15, 1951 .
