The Loch of Stenness and the Loch of Harray are the two largest lakes in the Orkney Islands . They are located on the main island Mainland . The Old Norse name is Steinnesvatn. The Loch of Stenness is named after the nearby parish of Stenness. It is connected to the Atlantic Ocean northeast of Stromness, making it the largest brackish water lagoon in Great Britain. The two lakes together have an area of 19.3 km². However, the volume is only small, because the Loch of Stenness has a maximum depth of 5.2 m. Together with the Stones of Stenness, it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site The Heart of Neolithic Orkney .
