Lochend Castle ( Scottish Gaelic : Caislen Cean Loch ) is an abandoned lowland castle in Campbeltown in the Scottish administrative unit Argyll and Bute . The castle once stood on Castlehill and that was where the MacDonald of Dunnyveg clan resided .
Archibald Campbell, 7th Earl of Argyll , had the castle rebuilt around 1609 . In the wars of the three kingdoms , the castle appears to have been burned to the ground in 1647. In 1778 a church was built on the remains of the castle.
