Lockwood-Mathews Mansion is a Norwalk mansion that now serves as a museum.

history

The building with its 62 rooms was built in 1868 by Detlef Lienau for the banking and railroad millionaire LeGrand Lockwood . In 1863 he had bought about 30 acres of land between West Avenue and the Norwalk River to build his house here. Lockwood's house is considered to be one of the oldest and most beautiful buildings of the Second Empire in the USA and a major work of Lienau, who worked with American craftsmen and numerous immigrant artists. The historicist building, which combines many styles, has a floor plan in the form of a Greek cross and outer walls made of granite . Lockwood's initials can be seen above the front door. Frederick Law Olmsted designed the park .

Construction began in 1864; In 1868 the landlord moved in, keeping an eye on two sources of wealth from this property: the Norwalk Horse Railway and the Danbury-Norwalk Railroad .

But LeGrand Lockwood, who was one of the victims of Black Friday 1869 , died in 1872 and a little later the property, which had cost 1.5 million dollars to build, was sold to Charles Drelincourt Mathews and his wife Rebecca for allegedly 90,000 dollars . The Mathews family, who came from New York, lived in the country house until 1938. In 1941 it became the property of the City of Norwalk and Elms Park, where the house was located, was opened to the public. When demolition threatened in the mid-20th century, the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum was founded to save the building. The museum aims to preserve the memory of the Victorian Age in America. Lockwood-Mathews Mansion has been a National Historic Landmark since December 30, 1970 and was included on the National Register of Historic Places .

Premises on the ground floor

Through the vestibule and entrance hall, which are located on the narrow western side of the building, one reaches the central octagonal rotunda of the house on a straight axis . This rotunda takes up the entire height of the house of 42 feet, is surrounded by a gallery at the level of the second floor, and receives its light from above. It has a parquet floor made of five different types of wood and an open fireplace and is decorated with a representation of the Pomona , among other things .

The rotunda leads to the dining room at the rear on the east side. This room was designed by George Platt in the style of the French Renaissance . It is equipped with furniture made of exotic woods, which offers space for 24 guests.

In the rear part of the house to the north, on the one hand, in the immediate vicinity of the dining room, there is the kitchen and, on the other hand, the billiard rooms. At the southeast corner, the dining room is followed by the so-called drawing room, a kind of living room. This room, which was furnished by the Herter Brothers company , was restored to its original state with the help of photographs. The ceiling painting was created by Pierre-Victor Galland in 1869 . It shows Venus playing with erotes. The picture was painted in oil on canvas. The restored chandelier has been hanging in the middle of the ceiling since 1997. The drawing room is built in front of the card room at the corner of the house, which is the lowest storey of the corner tower.

The center of the south front behind the semicircular terrace is occupied by the Music Room, also equipped by Herter Brothers. Particularly noteworthy is the painterly design of the walls and the ceiling fields.

The third large room on the representative side of the house is the library on the southeast corner. It is in the style of the Italian Renaissance and the work of the designer Leon Marcotte . The so-called Conservatory, which served as a winter garden, is attached to the library.

use

In addition to being used as a museum, Lockwood-Mathews Mansion is occasionally used as a film set, for example in 1975 and 2004 for The Women of Stepford (1975) and The Women of Stepford (2004) .
