Lode Van Dessel

Lode Van Dessel (born February 5, 1909 , † July 7, 1993 ) was a Belgian-American organist and composer.

Van Dessel studied at the Lemmensinstituut in Mechelen with Jules Van Nuffel , Flor Peeters and Marinus de Jong . From 1928 he was organist at the St. Pieterskerk in Turnhout and taught at the municipal music academy. He founded the De Vedel chamber choir and was instrumental in founding the Kon. Turnhoutse Concertvereniging involved. In 1947 he went to the USA and became an organist at St. Thomas Church in Ann Arbor . In 1949 he took over the position of organist at St. Aloysius Church in Detroit and became a teacher for organ, piano, harmony and counterpoint at the Palestrina Institute for Liturgical Music.

In addition to piano and organ works and songs, Van Dessel composed eleven masses, two oratorios, the Singspiel Monica , the choral suite Ring om het Jaar , an overture ( King Lear ) for large orchestra, a Symphonietta da Camera , a ballet suite, two organ suites and string quartets .
