Julius Joseph Paul Maria van Nuffel (also Jules Van Nuffel ; born March 21, 1883 in Hemiksem , Belgium ; † June 25, 1953 in Wilrijk , Belgium) was a Belgian composer, priest, church musician and music teacher.

Compositional style

His compositions mainly consist of motets , psalm settings and mass ordinaries , i.e. church music choral works. He also composed some Flemish songs. Van Nuffel's choral music is characterized by an expressive melody, the harmony is characterized by chromatics , modulations and enharmonics . Many of his choral works, which are made up of a polyphonic choir and an organ, are designed for a large church space and require a vocal well-cast choir . The works were originally conceived for performances in the cathedral of Mechelen , one of the main places where van Nuffel worked.
