Lodenwalke Ramsau am Dachstein is an Austrian company for the production of loden and walkloden . According to the company, the company from Ramsau am Dachstein is the oldest commercial enterprise in Styria .

Company history

The company was first mentioned in 1434 in the Admonter Urbar , a list of goods belonging to the monks of Admont Abbey . Since then, there are documentary records, purchase contracts and tax payments that document the history of the company.

The fabrics were made by hand until the 19th century . It was not until 1860 that Johann Walcher acquired carding machines from Leoben and set up the first machine spinning mill. His son Zacharias Walcher bought the first mechanical looms and hand knitting machines in Germany .

However, some of the old workshops still exist today. However, the company was rebuilt and modernized in 1938 after a flood in a higher location. Electricity from two of the company's own hydropower plants provides drive and heating. In the 1990s, the main house was enlarged and the rooms redesigned.

Today, not only loden fabrics are produced in the loden mill, but above all fine fabrics for suits, costumes and coats - from raw sheep's wool to the finished piece. The fine-haired wool of Australian sheep has been used as a raw material for these goods alongside local sheep's wool .

Jörg Steiner - a direct descendant of Johann Walcher - has been the owner of loden production since 2006.

The original Schladming pearl loden , which is characterized by its irregular appearance, has become a popular costume and is now known far beyond the country's borders.
