Lodeweijk Theewes

Lodeweijk Theewes also Lodevyke Tyves; Theeus; Theeuwes ( bl. 1560–1585) was a Flemish harpsichord maker . He was born in Antwerp and was a member of the Guild of St. Luke from 1561 . His father was the master Jacob Theewes (bl. 1533–1557), who built lutes and harpsichords, his mother Anna Ghijs. Theewes settled in London around 1565 . He is mentioned in the church book of the parish of St. Martin's Le Grand in 1565 and for the last time in 1585. His claviorganum from 1579 is considered the oldest preserved harpsichord built in England.

  • Claviorganum 1579, Victoria and Albert Museum ; a fragmentary single-manual harpsichord part with an 8'-8'-4 '. Traces of a metal keel were found on at least one register, and the instrument apparently also had an arpichordum pull, as is usually found in Flemish Muselar virginals . The instrument had a continuous chromatic range from C – c '' ', at a time when on the European continent almost only keyboard instruments with a short bass octave were built. The instrument was built for Anthony Roper . The instrument is signed: LODOWICUS THEEWES ME FESIT 1579 . The body is made of oak and covered with processed and dyed leather.
