Oscar Woolverton Griswold (born October 22, 1886 in Ruby Valley , † September 28, 1959 in Colorado Springs ) was an American general who became known as a corps leader in the Southwest Pacific during World War II .

Life

Early military career

Griswold was 1886 in Elko County in the state of Nevada born. He attended the University of Nevada, Reno , in 1905 , moved to the Westpoint Military Academy in 1906 , where he graduated as a lieutenant in 1910 . During the First World War he was posted to China from 1914 to 1917 and served in the American Expeditionary Forces in northern France in 1918 . As a major in the 84th Infantry Division he took part in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive and served as a lieutenant colonel in the American occupation in Germany from 1918 to 1919 . From 1921 to 1924 he studied at the military academy, graduated from 1925 from the United States Army War College in Carlisle , which he graduated in 1929 as 189th of a class of 258th students. From 1929 to 1931 he worked on the General Staff of the War Ministry . Between 1932 and 1936 he was a member of the board of the Office for Infantry, then he was head of this section until 1939.

Second World War

In September 1939 he was given command of the 29th Infantry Regiment at Fort Benning . In October 1940, he was promoted to Brigadier General and appointed command of the training camp at Camp Croft. With his promotion to Major General on August 18, 1941, he was given command of the 4th Infantry Division . In April 1943 he was appointed commander of the XIV Corps , which was used against the Japanese in New Georgia and Bougainville . In the spring of 1945 he rose to lieutenant-general and led his corps as part of the 6th Army under General Krueger during the invasion of the Philippines . His troops were involved in the Battle of Manila in February and March 1945 .

After the death of Lieutenant General Buckner , the commander in the Southwest Pacific, General MacArthur temporarily nominated him as the new commander of the 10th Army in June 1945 . During the Battle of Okinawa , General Joseph Stilwell received this post.

post war period

After the Second World War, Griswold commanded the 7th Army from June 11, 1946 to March 15, 1947 and the 3rd Army from March 15 to April 14, 1947 . After retiring from the army, he moved to Colorado Springs in October 1947 and became director of the Broadmoor Resort ice hockey and figure skating center. In 1948 he served as the director of Athletic Events for the defunct Broadmoor Hotels Corporation. Health problems forced him to retire and he died in 1959.
