history

The company emerged from a pharmacy that James Lofthouse ran in Fleetwood. In 1865 he had the idea of filling a tincture of eucalyptus , liquorice and menthol in bottles for the fishermen . Due to the harsh working conditions, these very often broke, so that James Lofthouse looked for an alternative. He thickened the recipe and punched pastilles from the mass. On November 18, 1963, the family converted the sole proprietorship into a Limited Company (Ltd.) .

It took almost 100 years before the pastilles were also offered outside the region. The founding granddaughter Doreen Lofthouse recognized the potential of Fisherman's Friend and expanded sales. Until the early 1970s, the pastilles were still made in the pharmacy, in 1972 production was started on a newly laid out company site on the outskirts of Fleetwood. Over the years it has been expanded continuously so that around six billion pastilles are now produced annually.

The expansion abroad started in Norway . The German market is now Fisherman's Friend's largest customer with a share of 25%. In the United States occupied Lofthouse of Fleetwood on pharmaceutical products for the cold season in ninth place in terms of sales and the packages sold.

Lucrative offers from competitors and others to take over the company have always been rejected. In an interview, Doreen Lofthouse said, among other things:

"We can only eat three times a day, get drunk once a day and drive a car at the same time."

Public engagement

In Fleetwood, the purchase and construction of some sculptures and buildings have been financially supported by the Lofthouse of Fleetwood .

The family is also helping to equip the Fleetwood Hospital with diagnostic equipment and to renovate the buildings.
