Logitech Media Server (formerly: SlimServer, SqueezeCenter and Squeezebox Server) is an audio streaming server that is being further developed by Logitech . The software was originally developed by Slim Devices to support their network music player Squeezebox . The Logitech Media Server uses its own protocol, the SlimProto TCP protocol, to enable communication and control of the player. Playing your own music collection requires the Logitech Media Server to be installed on the home network ; Logitech provides a playlist with various radio stations for playing Internet radio.

Logitech Media Server is open source software and is under the GNU General Public License .

Logitech's own Squeezebox player is available in different versions, with LAN or WLAN , analog and digital audio output, touch screen and remote control.

The following devices were sold by Logitech, but are no longer officially available: SLIMP3, Squeezebox, Squeezebox2, Squeezebox3, Transporter, Squeezebox Receiver & Controller, Squeezebox Boom, Squeezebox Radio, Squeezebox Touch.

In addition to Logitech devices, third-party hardware devices are also supported, for example Chumby or SoundBridge from Roku.

SqueezePlay is based on SqueezeOS, the operating system on which the Squeezebox Duet, Radio and Touch run. There is also SoftSqueeze , a free, emulated software version of the Squeezebox.

Squeezebox Server was originally designed to deliver audio streams to the Squeezebox network players. The audio stream is also transmitted via the Internet protocol and can be played by any number of MP3 software players that can play a stream, such as Winamp or iTunes . SoftSqueeze (written in Java ) is a software player specially designed for streaming from the Logitech Media Server. Another software player is SqueezeSlave , which works as a command line player without a display, or the Android app Squeeze Player .

All players can usually be controlled via the Logitech Media Server web interface or applications on WLAN devices, for example using Android or iPhone apps. Squeezebox hardware players usually also come with an IR remote control.

Logitech Media Server runs on desktop, server and various NAS hardware, such as QNAP Turbo NAS, Synology Disk Station, Netgear ReadyNAS, Buffalo Linkstation, Linksys NSLU2, THECUS N5200 & N7700, Xtreamer eTRAYz and some devices with the FreeNAS system . However, Logitech only supports Netgear ReadyNAS NAS devices.

The Logitech media server software is written in Perl and runs on Linux , Microsoft Windows , Apple Macintosh , BSD and Solaris operating systems.

There is a large number of plug-ins for the Logitech Media Server that significantly expand the range of functions.
