Lohmann-Brown hen in hobby keeping

Lohmann Brown (LB) are a breeding line of domestic fowls from the EW Group company Lohmann Tierzucht . The name “Lohmann Brown” is registered in the German Patent and Trademark Office as a word and figurative mark for hatching eggs , day-old chicks , pullets and roosters, as well as poultry.

Lay hybrid

Laying hens for mostly industrialized poultry farming on specialized poultry farms are now hybrid chickens , i.e. cross-breeding products that cannot be bred. Lohmann Brown are a parent stock of laying hens that produce brown eggs , the brown layers .

Offspring of Lohmann Brown chickens are marketed under the trade names “Lohmann Brown Classic” and “Lohmann Brown Lite”.

  • Lohmann Brown-Classic are laying hens with medium-sized brown eggs that are marketed worldwide and should also be suitable for alternative husbandry, such as free-range husbandry . According to the product description, they lay up to 320 eggs in 12 months of laying or 405 in 16 months of laying. There are significantly less in floor housing . Lohmann Brown-Classic is the most common type of laying hen on European poultry farms for commercial egg production.
  • Lohmann Brown-Lite lay slightly smaller, marketable brown eggs in higher numbers. According to the product description, this is up to 325 eggs in 12 months of laying or 410 in 16 months of laying.

The Braunleger Lohmann Brown-Extra (which were specially optimized for large L and XL eggs) are no longer in the company's range.

The company is also working on laying hen lines especially for the organic market, which is becoming more important, these are called Lohmann Brown-Plus : The use of the classic Lohmann Browns is viewed critically because high-performance lines in organic nutrition particularly suffer from deficiency symptoms (self-exploitation), and too Feather pecking and cannibalism tend, which is why it is generally recommended to shorten the beak , a measure that is undesirable, especially in organic agriculture (but this can also be largely managed through husbandry methods). This line was optimized for better feed conversion, but is no longer offered.

distribution

In Austria today, Lohmann Brown Classic are by far the dominant line of chicken in egg production, both in conventional and organic farming (organic proportion of eggs around 18%) - despite all efforts to promote old and domestic breeds. Contrary to the prevalence that the relevant organic guidelines do not prohibit hybrid chickens and that the market share of brown eggs in Austria is 90%. Here, however, emphasis is placed on particularly large eggs, which led to bottlenecks in the L / XL category and the development of the Lohmann Tradition laying hen line.
