history

The company was founded in 1932 as Deutsche Fischmehl GmbH, began breeding poultry in 1957 and began breeding laying hens in 1959 with licenses from Heisdorf & Nelson (USA). The establishment of flocks for the production of VALO-SPF eggs began in 1968. The broiler area was outsourced to the Lohmann Indian River in 1994.

Lohmann is now regarded as the world's largest breeder of laying hens and is one of the pioneers in the internationalization of agribusiness in Germany and the commercialization of breeding advice.

Products

Lohmann Tierzucht offers the following laying hens on the markets:

animal cruelty

In September 2011, the district court of Cuxhaven issued a penalty order for cruelty to animals against the Lohmann Group. Accordingly, the combs and toes of roosters were cut off over a long period of time in the company's operations. The amputations were carried out only for marking and without anesthesia. The verdict states that both the comb and toes are well-supplied with blood and are nerve-supplied body parts, "so that cutting them off hurts the animals very much and the pain lasts for a long time." The defendants were aware of this fact. The company was sentenced to a payment of 100,000 euros, the highest sum ever punished for a violation of the Animal Welfare Act .

The managing director responsible for the amputations, Rudolf Preisinger, received a suspended fine. According to Spiegel, he only escaped a tougher sentence "because the authorities in Lower Saxony had tacitly tolerated these practices for a long time, as the prosecution's investigations showed."

Lohmann has been working with the Demeter cultivation association for a number of years on the development of a so-called dual -purpose chicken , a cross between “two laying and two fattening lines, which should guarantee that the hens produce enough eggs and the roosters still set enough meat”, so also to solve the problem of the killing of male chicks in laying hens.
