Localization sharpness

The localization sharpness belongs to the psycho-acoustic determinations (measurements). It is the smallest change in one or more characteristics of a sound event that just leads to a perceived change in location of the auditory event . This can be when listening to natural sound sources or when playing back loudspeaker stereophony .

The localization sharpness characterizes the fact that the listening room is less differentiated than the sound source room. The spatial resolution of the hearing is lower than the resolution that can be achieved with physical measurement techniques. As is customary in psychoacoustics, we define localization sharpness as the change in location of the sound source at which 50% of the test subjects notice a change in the location of the auditory event. The threshold definition can be specified as 100% = sharp: narrow, precise, exact, well focused and 0% = fuzzy: wider, unclear, more spatial, poorly focused.

The word localization blurring should be avoided because of confusion.

Even if it seems worth striving to always generate phantom sound sources with the best localization sharpness in stereo recording , artistic considerations sometimes speak against it.
