Locomotive (rock)
The locomotive is a striking rock climbing north of the health resort Rathen in Saxon Switzerland . The rock, also known as the Great Ruin , is approx. 30 m high and is divided into two parts, called the Locomotive Dome and the Locomotive Esse . The ridge between the two is referred to as the Kesselgrat , the rocky point next to the Esse as a pipe . For a short time there was also a weather vane in the shape of a wheel on the cathedral. The locomotive rises on the massif of honey stones .
The current name of the rock originated in the second half of the 19th century. Wilhelm Leberecht Götzinger had still described it as a large ruin , later names were Waldschlößchen , robbery castle and around 1880 still camel . The cathedral of the locomotive was first climbed in 1886 by Friedrich Hartmann and Robert Kappmeier . In the history of climbing in the Saxon Switzerland , the June 7, 1903 by Albert Kunze, featuring Oliver Perry-Smith carried out the first ascent of the forge the first step in the climbing in the free wall . Until then, climbers had mainly orientated themselves on chimneys and cracks . The first ascent of the day in difficulty classified V and as Lokomotiv raid marked climbing route on the chimney triggered a comprehensive, up to 1,910 permanent development period in the Saxon Switzerland from where climbers like Kunze, Perry-Smith and Rudolf Fehrmann many important climbing peak , as the Barbarine , climbed the Great Hercules Column , the Jungfer or the Devil's Tower for the first time.
