Chabeso is the name of an old lemonade brand based on clockwise lactic acid . Chabeso was widespread in the pre-war period and is now produced by the Riegele brewery in Augsburg and the Hacklberg brewery in Passau.

Chabeso has also been the product name of a lemon cracker from Wattens (Tyrol, Austria) since 1939 .

history

Chabeso was invented by the food chemist Ernst Büschler at the turn of the century after he had read a probiotic book by Ilya Ilyich Metschnikow , in which a connection was made between the old age of Bulgarians and Romanians and the regular consumption of sour milk.

"Chabeso supplies the body with the lactic acid it urgently needs in a pleasant and tasty form."

- Dr. Büschler, March 17, 1914

In 1895 the chemical company CH Boehringer Sohn discovered how lactic acid could be produced in large quantities with the help of bacteria. This is how the company became a pioneer in biotechnological production on an industrial scale. In 1911, with the founding of Chabeso GmbH in Mainz as a subsidiary , CH Boehringer Sohn brought alcohol-free lemonade to the market for the first time, the name "Chabeso" being derived from the name of the company [CH Boehringer Sohn / CH (a) B (e )So)].

From March 17, 1914, the drink was produced in Germany and soon worldwide. Between 1925 and 1932 Chabeso won medals and plaques of honor at international trade fairs and exhibitions.

In the 1920s, Chabeso was marketed under the license agreement system. The flavoring raw material was supplied, which CH Boehringer Sohn sold to bottling companies. After the Second World War, Chabeso mixed drinks appeared. However, the Chabeso production was not able to cope with the fast-moving market of the post-war period, so that it was last stopped in Biberach an der Riss in the 1960s .

Up to the Second World War there were 57 Chabeso factories in Germany, others in Belgium, the USA, Argentina, Iceland, Egypt and in the Middle East. After the war, however, Chabeso has only survived in a few factories.

At the end of the 1980s, the Riegele brewery acquired the naming rights and reintroduced the product in 2006. The Passau Innstadt brewery also sells its lemonade under the name Chabeso.

The company Iris Musack sodas produced in Wattens since 1939 a lemon Kracherl . The added aromas are responsible for the special taste of the drink, which is compared in different ways with glacier sugar , gummy bears or bazooka . It is distributed on the one hand via ramp sales in Wattens and, on the other hand, since 2013 via the Tyrolean supermarket chain MPreis .
