The Alte Neustadt engine shed in Magdeburg is a listed historic engine shed located in the Alte Neustadt district on the Hafenstrasse 9a property. It is one of the oldest preserved rectangular engine sheds in Germany .

Architecture and history

The locomotive shed was built in 1863 and originally belonged to the Alte Neustadt freight yard . In the year of construction, the railway facilities were transferred from the Magdeburg-Wittenbergeschen Railway Company to the Magdeburg-Halberstädter Railway Company .

The single-storey building was made of quarry stone. It is covered by a relatively flat sloping, overhanging gable roof . On the gable ends there are large arched entrances that are flanked by high-lying oculi . The long sides each have seven large arched windows. All round arches, including the oculi frames, are made of bricks, which avoids the need for more complex processing of the surrounding quarry stone masonry. A water crane is attached to one of the long sides of the shed .

In later times the engine shed was used by the Magdeburg port railway of the neighboring trading port . After a long period of vacancy and dilapidation, the engine shed was acquired privately in 2006 and renovated in accordance with heritage requirements by 2012 . Today it is the seat of an engineering and expert office and is also used as a training and event location. There is no longer a connection to the railway network. Since 1998/1999, Theodor-Kozlowski-Straße has been running along the immediate east of the engine shed .

In the local register of monuments , the locomotive shed is listed as a monument under registration number 094 18237 . At times, there was also a double registration under the number 094 76699.
