Lombardi's on Spring Street, Manhattan

The Lombardi's is a pizzeria in Manhattan's Nolita section. Opened in 1905, it is recognized by the Pizza Hall of Fame as the first pizzeria in the USA.

history

Starting in 1897, Gennaro Lombardi offered workers from the nearby factories food ("tomato pies") to take away for lunch in a grocery store (address: 53½ Spring Street). In 1905 Lombardi received a license to open a restaurant. He soon had a returning customer base, including the Italian tenor Enrico Caruso . Lombardi's son George later took over the business.

In 1984 Lombardi's closed at its original location, but was reopened ten years later one block down (32 Spring Street) by Gennaro Lombardi III, Gennaro Lombardi's grandson, and his friend John Brescio. As a result, the restaurant lost its status as the longest-running pizzeria in the US, which now went to Papa's Tomato Pies in Trenton, New Jersey .
