The Lombok earthquake of July 2018 was a very shallow earthquake on the morning of July 29, 2018 with moment magnitude M w  6.4 that hit the Indonesian island of Lombok . The hypocenter of the quake was 14 km below the Sembalun district in the East Lombok administrative district . According to the authorities, 20 people were killed and 401 others injured as a result of the earthquake.

The earthquake was the forerunner of the stronger Lombok earthquake on August 5, 2018 with a magnitude M w  6.9.

The earthquake triggered landslides, which in turn cut off large numbers of hikers on the Rinjani volcano . Authorities announced on August 1 that 1,226 people had been rescued from the mountain, 700 of whom were foreigners from a total of 26 countries.

The earthquake occurred on Sunday at 6:47 a.m. local time at a shallow depth of 6.4 km. Affected residents reported severe tremors near the epicenter and that numerous structures collapsed. Dozens of residential buildings were destroyed and property damage was widely reported. The tremors lasted ten to twenty seconds. The earthquake was felt as far as Denpasar in Bali . A temple collapsed and an office building was damaged in Karangasem Governorate , Bali.

The national civil protection authority BNPB confirmed 564 aftershocks by August 4, with the strongest aftershock having a magnitude of 5.7 M w .

Immediately after the earthquake, Lombok suffered widespread power outages and telecommunications collapsed. The national electricity company Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) announced that it would temporarily cut off the electricity supply in the east of the island to determine the damage. Shortly afterwards, PLN announced that it would restore normal power supply within a few hours.

According to the authorities on July 29, the worst damage occurred in eastern Lombok, especially in the districts of Sembalun and Sambelia. Hundreds of tents were erected for the homeless.

According to BNPB, over 1,000 buildings on Lombok were damaged or destroyed. The Indonesian Authority for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) called on the population not to return to their homes because aftershocks were expected in the following days.

The earthquake triggered landslides in the north of the Rinjani, which also affected the routes that are used by hiking tourists on the mountain. Authorities said on July 29 that 826 hikers were cut off and awaiting rescue.

The government immediately closed access to Rinjani National Park and banned hiking and other activities in the area amid fears of landslides. Indonesian President Joko Widodo , who had planned a visit to Lombok before the earthquake, instructed Muhammad Zainul Majdi , the governor of West Nusa Tenggara , to immediately dispatch search and rescue forces to the affected area.

In Selong , the capital of East Lombok, dozens of patients have been evacuated from the regional hospital, while a health center in Sembalun was badly damaged.

Victim

The authorities confirmed that a tourist from Malaysia was killed by a collapsing wall. A total of 20 people were killed by the effects of the earthquake.
