Long Caye is an island off the coast of Belize . It is one of the 450 islands of the Belize Barrier Reef . Administratively it belongs to the Belize District .

geography

Long Caye is one of six islands of the Lighthouse Reef , an atoll about 75 km east of Belize City, and the only one permanently inhabited. The island, located in the southwest of the atoll, has roughly the shape of an irregular triangle with a pointed side from which a small, hook-shaped headland protrudes. Much of the island consists of lagoons and mangrove forest and is under nature protection.

fauna

Due to its significant land mass compared to most other Belizean islands, Long Caye is a resting place for migratory birds on the way north or south. The island serves as a breeding area for Coccyzus minor, jackdawgrackel , osprey , golden warbler , green heron and white-headed pigeon , among others .

use

Like many islands off the coast of Belize, Long Caye is privately owned. In the 1960s, the island was acquired by NASA engineer Jackson Lane Edwards II, whose heirs built an ecologically oriented holiday complex with an attached biological research station on Long Caye and sold parts of the island in plots. In addition to private holiday homes, there are also other small all-inclusive resorts, one of which operates a shuttle service, which is the only commercially operated connection between the mainland and the island. At the reef edge about one kilometer west of Long Caye there are good conditions for large fish, so that the area with ten diving areas is one of the most attractive areas for scuba divers in Belize. Belize's most famous diving area, the Great Blue Hole , is located about twelve kilometers northeast of Long Caye.

The painter Bernard Oulie lives on Long Caye.
