The Macal River is a river in the Cayo District in western Belize . Among other things, it flows through San Ignacio , Belize's second largest city, shortly afterwards it forms the Belize River at the confluence with the Mopan . The catchment area is around 1492 km².
In 2005, the Chalillo Hydroelectric Dam was put into operation by Fortis Inc. , the Canadian owner of the national energy supply, around 33 km south of San Ignacio. The construction sparked controversy because of its impact on the surrounding rainforest.
