Long Island (also: Île Longue ) is an island of the Republic of the Seychelles northeast of the island of Mahé .

geography

The island is located on the Saint Anne Channel and belongs to the group of Île au Cerf (Cerf Island), Round Island and Moyenne Island . It belongs to the area of the Sainte Anne Marine National Park and politically to the district of Mont Fleuri . The island is famous for its soft beaches and turquoise sea. The island reaches a height of 90  m and is covered with coconut palms .

history

In 1825 a settlement was established on the island. A family from the Seychelles acquired the islands of Long, Round and Moyenne. The settlement had about 25 inhabitants and was at West Point . In 1900 the village was abandoned and a quarantine station for sailors with smallpox was set up. The island later served as a youth prison (Seychelles Juvenile Prison). In 2006 the prisoners were transferred to Montagne Posée Prison on the island of Mahé, where they were used in forced labor in the land reclamation projects. Today the island is home to the Pelangi Resort and Spa with 55 villas. The hotel also built the Seychelles' first funicular to transport guests to the CHI Spa Facilities and Wedding Chapel , which are located on the central peak of the island. The employees live in the village at the west end, where the former prison was located. A new village with 40 houses and a new chapel has emerged on the south coast.

Flora Fauna

The reefs and bays of the island are rich in fish species. Green sea turtles live on the reef tops and occasionally visit the island.
