Lonnie Hillyer

Lonnie Hillyer (born March 25, 1940 in Monroe (Georgia) , † July 1, 1985 in New York City ) was an American jazz trumpeter .

Hillyer began working with Detroit pianist Barry Harris at the age of 14 . In 1960 he moved to New York, recorded with Yusef Lateef and joined the group of Charles Mingus , with whom he worked for more than ten years, a. a. To be heard as a soloist on Music Written for Monterey (1965), the big band album Let My Children Hear Music from 1971 and in the concert recording Charles Mingus and Friends in Concert from 1972. Together with saxophonist Charles McPherson , whom he already knew from Detroit , he led a quintet with which he also recorded.

Hillyer died of cancer, leaving behind his wife Maxine, son, Lonnie Darryl Hillyer (who works as a rock bass guitarist), and daughter Hadiya.
