Doune Castle

Lord Doune is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .

The title is named after the historic seat of the Lords, Doune Castle in Doune , Stirling .

Award

The title was on November 24, 1581 by King James VI. created for Sir James Stewart . He was a grandson of Andrew Stewart, 1st Lord Avondale . The title was originally inheritable to his legitimate male descendants, on January 6, 1588 (confirmed by the Act of Parliament of June 5, 1592) Jacob VI bestowed on him. the title again, with the special addition that the title can be bequeathed to any male heir ( heirs male whatsoever ) bearing the name and coat of arms of the Stewart family.

His son, who later became the 2nd Lord, married Elizabeth Stewart, 2nd Countess of Moray in 1581 , from whose right he was named Earl of Moray . His son followed in 1591 as 3rd Earl of Moray and in 1592 as 3rd Lord Doune and in 1620 received the title of Lord St. Colme with royal confirmation from his cousin James Stewart, 2nd Lord Saint Colme . Both lord titles have since been subordinate titles to the Earl of Moray. The eldest son of the respective Earls leads since then the heir apparent ( Heir Apparent ) the courtesy title Lord Doune .
