Doune Castle is a late medieval castle in the former county of Stirling , Perthshire , in Scotland . It stands on a rock spur above the River Teith , 13 kilometers southeast of the town of Callander at the foot of the Trossach Mountains in the Scottish Highlands .
history
The castle was built around 1390 by Robert Stewart, 1st Duke of Albany, presumably in place of an older fortification. In the 15th and 16th centuries it served the Scottish monarchs , including Mary Queen of Scots , as a country residence and hunting lodge . During their second uprising in 1745, the Jacobites used them as a prison. The castle was extensively restored in the 19th century.
Today the site is managed by Historic Scotland and can be visited for an entrance fee.
investment
The unfinished castle is protected on three sides by steep slopes. The access from the north is secured by earthworks. The residential and representative buildings are grouped around a spacious inner courtyard, surrounded by high walls, including the dominant structure of the 30-meter-high, four-story residential tower Lord's Hall , through whose ground floor the 14-meter-long arched doorway leads, and the Great Hall with kitchen.
Trivia
In Walter Scott's first novel Waverley , the castle is the refuge of the protagonist Edward Waverley.
The castle is known as the setting for the movie The Holy Grail of English comedy troupe Monty Python , where it in several scenes as Camelot , Castle doses Schreck ( "Castle Anthrax ") and Swamp Castle is the act ( "Swamp Castle") site.
In addition, filming for the American fantasy television series Game of Thrones took place here.
The film adaptation of the novel Fire and Stone by Diana Gabaldon in the television series Outlander was also partly shot at Doune Castle. The building represents the Roman Castle Leoch .
