Doune ( Gaelic : An Dùn , "the castle") is a Burgh in the Stirling Council Area in Scotland , on the Teith . The village is in the Parish Kilmadock .

history

The cityscape is dominated by the Doune Castle , built in the late 14th century . Architecturally, the castle is a mixture of fortress and mansion .

Doune was known for the pistols made there , but production of the same may have ended due to competition from manufacturers in, for example, Birmingham , where production was cheaper. Today, some pistols can be seen in major museums, including the Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh . A pistol from Doune is said to have fired the first shot in the American Revolutionary War .

The land east of Doune was owned by the Keirs of Stirling (who still own the Keir estate , with the exception of the Keir House itself, which was sold), the current owner of the Keir Estates is the politician Archie Stirling . A memorial near Doune is dedicated to a member of the family, SAS founder David Stirling , as Hill o 'Rou .

archeology

The remains of a Roman fort have been excavated by Headland Archeology . Three trenches and the foundations of a rampart were discovered as part of the defensive structure. At the back of the wall were five stone bread ovens. Behind the ovens there is a gravel path (one of the fort's internal roads) that has been interpreted as an interval path. Fragments of sigillata and amphorae from the time of the Flavian Dynasty and the first Roman invasion of Scotland (AD 79 to about AD 85) have been rediscovered .

4.5km southeast in Coldoch is a well-preserved Broch .

Further information

Doune Speed Hillclimb is one of the most famous hillclimb courses in Scotland and is the venue for one round of the British Hill Climb Championships every year . The city can be accessed from the Doune Railway Station . A couple of scenes from The Knights of the Coconut were filmed in Doune Castle .
