Zechner attended the main ski school and the ski trade school in Schladming . He was a member of the Styrian national squad for several years , winning the FIS giant slalom in Haus im Ennstal in 1984 and finishing sixth at the Austrian championships in 1983 and fifth in the combination in 1987 . In autumn 1987 he got the opportunity to take part in a training session with the team of the Austrian Ski Association . He showed such good performance that he made his debut in the World Cup on December 7, 1987 in the first downhill of the 1987/88 season in Val-d'Isère . The then 22-year-old finished this race in 30th position, but already attracted more attention five days later when he reached eleventh place in the downhill from Val Gardena with the high starting number 48.
Thrown back by injuries remained so for the time being his best World Cup result until in January 1989, in two combinations went into the top ten: The Hahnenkamm combination of Kitzbühel he finished ninth and in the Lauberhorn combination of Wengen tenth. The next month he reached third place in the downhill at the Austrian championships in 1989 . After another injury, Zechner lost his ÖSV squad membership in the spring of 1990, whereupon he ended his career as a ski racer. Today Zechner is a trainer, including at the Schladming Ski School, and sports director for alpine skiing in the Styrian Ski Association.
