The title was created on February 12, 1626 for the Hon. James Campbell , son of Archibald Campbell, 7th Earl of Argyll by his second marriage. On March 28, 1642, he was also raised to Earl of Irvine and Lord Lundie .

In contrast to the other two titles, the Lordship Kintyre was bestowed with the special inheritance regulation that it was inheritable to any male heir ("his heirs male whatsoever") instead of just to direct male descendants. Therefore, the title fell at Cambell's childless death in September 1645 to his half-brother from the first marriage of his father, Archibald Campbell, 1st Marquess of Argyll , while the Earldom of Irvine and the Lordship Lundie expired.

This 2nd Lord Kintyre had already inherited his father in 1638 as 8th Earl of Argyll , 9th Lord Campbell and 8th Lord Lorne and in 1641 had been raised to Marquess of Argyll . His titles were revoked in 1661 for high treason, but restored to his son in 1663, with the exception of the title of Marquis. His son was also elevated to Duke of Argyll in 1701 . The Lordship of Kintyre has since become a subordinate title of the respective duke.
