The Lord Ligonier was a British slave ship .

The Lord Ligonier sailed on 5 July 1767 140 slaves as cargo on board the Gambia River in Juffure on the West African coast to Annapolis , Maryland . With 98 surviving slaves, the ship reached the American coast on September 29, 1767 under the command of Captain Davies .

Kunta Kinte

For his novel Roots , Alex Haley assumed that his ancestor Kunta Kinte was abducted on this ship. On this he built his semi-fictional family story. This was also filmed in 1977 as Roots . The two-masted brig unicorn was used for the shooting .
