Lorenz Lechler (also Lacher and Lechner , * around 1460 in Heidelberg (?); † before 1538 (?) In Heidelberg (?)) Was a German builder , court builder from the Palatinate, and author of a master craftsman's book .

Life

Not very much is known about Lechler's life. He was born around 1460 and is first attested before 1496 in Esslingen . There he worked at the city church of St. Dionys , where he created the rood screen and the sacraments . Lechler planned to go to Milan to build the cathedral there, because the city council of Esslingen issued him a letter of recommendation in 1496. But he doesn't seem to have worked in Milan.

In 1503 he was called to Heidelberg for life as "the Palatinate Baumeister vnd Pixenmeister", where he worked as a court artist under the Electors Philipp and Ludwig V. In 1516 he wrote an “Instruction” for his son Moritz , one of the few surviving master craftsmen's books. Thereafter, there are no further explicit testimonies about the life of Lorenz Lechler. He probably died before 1538 when his son Moritz was appointed chief architect in the Palatinate. Another son Lorenz was a bell and gun founder in Heidelberg and created a bronze tomb for Ludwig V.
