Origin and family

Lorenz Tewes was born the son of foreman Franz Tewes and was married to Maria Böhmer. The marriage resulted in three children.

Professional background

After attending primary school, Tewes graduated from high school in Essen in 1920 . As a war volunteer he took part in World War I and was a lieutenant in the reserve. In 1920 he took part in actions against the French occupation and fled to Gelsenkirchen because of the persecution. In 1921 he was a volunteer in the fighting in Upper Silesia and then an intern at Krupp in Essen. This was followed by studies at the Technical University of Darmstadt with a degree as a graduate engineer and subsequent employment at the company "Eisen- und Stahlindustrie" in Essen. In 1931 he became unemployed.

He joined the NSDAP on February 1, 1932 and was an employee in the Gau leadership (organization office) and also an adjutant at the Gelsenkirchen district leadership. From October 1933 to May 1934 he was NSDAP district leader in Gelsenkirchen. In the Gelsenkirchen City Council, he was parliamentary group manager and a member of the main committee. On June 1, 1934 he became district leader in Warendorf in personal union with the office of mayor before he became district leader of Ahaus-Coesfeld on March 10, 1938. He stayed in this office - with interruptions - until May 1, 1944, when he became district leader of Ahaus. He did 18 months of military service and was most recently major in the reserve.

After the war he went into hiding and reported on June 26, 1947 at the Eselheide internment camp . He was interned in Neuengamme for more than nine months. In March 1948 he was transferred to the Münster penal institution and sentenced by the Münster district court to six months in prison on July 31, 1948 for violating the peace and crimes against humanity (active participation in the Reichskristallnacht in Ahaus). After serving his sentence, he was initially at large until he was sentenced on April 27, 1949 to two years and six months in prison by the Bielefeld Court of Appeal . He served the sentences in Esterwegen . He received unemployment benefits for more than three years before he found work as an engineer at the Vereinigte Kesselwerke in Düsseldorf in August 1954.
