geography

Lorenzana

The medieval village Lorenzana is located on a hill at 127 m about 35 km southeast of Pisa in a wooded hilly landscape, the Colline Pisane , above the valley of the Tora river.

History and economy

The name of the place is derived from a Latin proper name ( Laurentius , from it Lorentianum or Laurentiana ). In the Middle Ages, the place was a settlement around a (no longer existing) castle, which was under the jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Pisa until the 10th century; The first written mention of the place comes from this time (927 and 934). In 1131 Lorenzana is mentioned in a bull of Pope Innocent II . The place came to the Republic of Pisa and was fortified with a city wall and watchtowers. In 1406 the place came under the rule of the Republic of Florence , which granted the place communal autonomy. 1722 Lorenzana was from Cosimo III. declared a county and given to the Florentine nobleman Francesco Lorenzi as a fief. As early as 1783 it came back to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and became an independent municipality.

On January 1, 2014, the place was merged with the neighboring municipality of Crespina to form the new municipality of Crespina Lorenzana.

In the past, the place lived almost exclusively from agriculture (wine, olive oil, fruit and grain, livestock) and forestry. Today their importance has decreased somewhat and some small industrial companies have settled in the community (food, clothing, furniture industry, leather goods).
