Lori Beth Garver (born May 22, 1961 in Lansing , Michigan ) is an American administrative officer. She worked from July 16, 2009 to September 6, 2013 as deputy head of the US space agency NASA and the second woman ever in a senior position at the executive level within NASA.

Life

Lori Garver graduated from Haslett High School in Haslett , Michigan in 1979 and received a BA in political science and economics from Colorado College in 1983 . From 1983 to 1984 she worked for John Glenn and, now very interested in space travel, did her Master of Arts in science, technology and public policy at George Washington University five years later . After that, she was employed by the independent National Space Society and she was a visiting professor at the International Space University . For her work, Garver received the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, along with other awards .

Employment at NASA

From 1996 to 2001, Lori Garver worked as assistant to the head of NASA and was jointly responsible for the strategic planning of the space agency and in this function was a member of the NASA Advisory Council . During Barack Obama's election campaign for the US presidency , Garver was appointed to his team as a space policy advisor. After Barack Obama's swearing in, she was put in charge of the Presidential Transition Agency Review Team . Together with Charles Bolden ( Administrator ), Lori Garver was appointed Deputy Administrator of NASA by President Obama on May 24, 2009 and was confirmed in office by the US Senate on July 15, 2009. She succeeded Shana Dale .

At the beginning of August 2013 it was announced that Lori Garver would serve as General Manager of the Air Line Pilots Association , the employee representative of the more than 64,000 commercial pilots of US and Canadian airlines.
