The Los Angeles-class Express is a series of four Panamax - Container motor ships of the Hamburg shipping company Hapag-Lloyd . The units manufactured in 2003 and 2004 are among the fifth generation of container ships.

description

The ship type of the Los Angeles Express series was built by the South Korean shipyard Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and was a further development of the previous Hapag-Lloyd classes with elements of the Ship of the Future project. You therefore have wheelhouses with optimized all-round visibility. The free-fall lifeboat, which is usually located at the stern on Hapag-Lloyd ships , is not available here; instead, two conventional closed lifeboats were installed on the side of the deckhouse. The total container capacity is almost 6,732 TEU, there are 500 connections for refrigerated containers .

The ship's superstructures are arranged about four fifths of the length aft. The ships have eight holds , seven of which are in front of and one behind the deckhouse. The holds are locked by pontoon hatch covers . The ten-cylinder two-stroke diesel main engine of the type 10K98MC-C, built by the Korean manufacturer HSD under license from MAN B&W, acts directly on the six-bladed fixed propeller with a diameter of 8.2 meters. The on-board energy is provided by four STX auxiliary diesels and one emergency diesel. To support the berthing maneuver the ships are equipped with a Wärtsilä - bow thruster fitted with 2,000 kilowatts of power.

All four ships were built in Hamburg on behalf of the North German shipping company H. Schuldt and are used in long-term charter by Hapag-Lloyd. The lead ship, the Northern Magnum , was laid down on July 21, 2003, floated on October 18, 2003 and put into service on December 29, 2003 as the Los Angeles Express . The last ship in the series, the Northern Monument , was delivered in April 2004 and put into service as the Busan Express . All ships of the class were used in liner service between Europe and East Asia.
