Los Siete Sabios de México
Los Siete Sabios de México , in English "The Seven Wise Men of Mexico", is the title of a biography published in 1950work by the Mexican author and politician Luis Calderón Vega on the seven founding members of the Sociedad de Conferencias y Conciertos .
Title and content of the book
Calderón chose the title based on the Seven Wise Men of Greece , not in direct reference to the seven people described. The group of people later known as the “seven wise men” because of the book title is also known as the “Generation of 1915”. They include:
- Alfonso Caso y Andrade , archaeologist, lawyer, politician and rector of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM),
- Antonio Castro Leal , English and Mexican Literature Expert and Rector of UNAM,
- Manuel Gómez Morín , founder of the Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) and Rector of the UNAM,
- Vicente Lombardo Toledano , well-known Mexican labor leader, party and university founder,
- Jesús Moreno Baca , lawyer,
- Alberto Vázquez del Mercado , judge at the Suprema Corte de Justicia de la Nación (SCJN) and
- Teófilo Olea y Leyva , judge at the SCJN.
The Sociedad de Conferencias y Conciertos
The Sociedad de Conferencias y Conciertos (German: Society for Conferences and Concerts ) was founded in 1916 to promote cultural awareness among students. In addition to the founding members, Narciso Bassols , Luis Enrique Erro , Daniel Cosío Villegas , Juvencio Ibarra , Miguel Palacios Macedo and Manuel Toussaint later joined the Sociedad de Conferencias y Conciertos .
