Manuel Toussaint y Ritter (* 1890 in Mexico City , † November 22, 1955 in New York ) was a Mexican art historian .

biography

After attending normal school and the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria , Toussaint studied at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes and the Escuela Nacional de Altos Estudios . He later taught as a professor of Spanish literature at the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria. From 1920 he was secretary to José Vasconcelos in his former function as rector of the Universidad Nacional de México , today's UNAM. In 1923 he became head of the Department of Fine Arts ( Departamento de Bellas Artes ), and in 1928 director of the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes at the university.

In 1934 Toussaint co-founded the Laboratorio de Arte of the UNAM, from which the Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas (IEE) arose in 1936 and was director there until his death. From 1944 to 1954 he also headed the Directorate for Colonial and Republic Monuments at the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia . He was a member of the Sociedad de Conferencias y Conciertos and since 1946 a member of the Colegio Nacional . In 1953 he received an honorary doctoratebecame the UNAM and became an honorary member of the University Club of México . In 1954 he was accepted at the Academia Mexicana de la Lengua .

Toussaint died in 1955 on returning home from the 18th Congress of Art Historians in Venice . The “Manuel Toussaint” photography archive at the Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas is named after him.
