history
Los de Abajo were founded in 1992 as a Latin Ska band with four members. Since then they have grown to a core of eight members and expanded their style under musical influences from rock , salsa, reggae , ska , cumbia , son jarocho and banda . The name "Los de Abajo" refers to the novel of the same name by Mariano Azuela (dt. The Lawless ).
Since 1998 they have been releasing their albums with Luaka Bop, David Byrne's record label . For the second album "CyberTropic Chilango Power" from 2002, the group received the 2003 BBC Award for World Music in the "Americas" category.
Los de Abajo see themselves as a political band and support the guerrilla organization Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN).
