Losheng Sanatorium
The Losheng Sanatorium ( Chinese 樂 生 療養院 , Pinyin Lèshēng Liáoyǎngyuàn ) is a former hospital for lepers in Taiwan . The building complex is located in the Xinzhuang District of New Taipei City . The name Losheng ( 樂 生 ) means "happy life".
The hospital was established for the isolation and medical treatment of lepers during the Japanese rule of Taiwan in the 1930s . It was the first public sanatorium for lepers (and first ever leper hospital) in Taiwan. From 1934 until the Japanese withdrew in 1945, lepers were forcibly quarantined there .
As part of the expansion of the Taipei metro network ( MRT ), the authorities planned to demolish the sanatorium in 2001 to make room for a subway depot. After violent protests by students, city planners, non-governmental organizations and the United Nations , the sanatorium's site was placed under protection as a cultural landscape in 2009, thus preventing its demolition.
