Lost & Found (1961-62)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lost & Found is the name of the release of early recordings by the US band The Beach Boys . It was released in February 1991. The recordings were made before the Beach Boys' record deal with Capitol Records . Lost & Found is an unofficial album. The first four recording sessions were produced by Hite and Dorinda Morgan, whose son Bruce is named as the author of some titles.

Recording sessions

  • Pieces 1, 2 and 21 were written on September 15, 1961, when the group, which at the time was still called “The Pendletones”, recorded the first demo versions of Luau and Surfin in Hite Morgan's home studio . The band name was a reference to the Pendleton Plaid Shirt , a popular surfer shirt, made by Pendleton Woolen Mills in Portland ( Oregon ).
  • Pieces 3 to 9 come from the session on October 3, 1961 in the World Pacific Studio in Los Angeles for the Beach Boys 'first single "Surfin' b / w Luau", which initially appeared on Hite Morgan's "X Records" and was brief then published by Candix Records . "Surfin '" becomes a regional hit and reaches # 5 in the California charts. In the US Billboard charts, the piece climbs to # 75. The master take of "Surfin '" is later licensed by Capitol Records and - with a different pitch - used on their first Beach Boys LP Surfin' Safari (although Capitol initially claims to have re-recorded the song).
  • Tracks 10 and 11 (recorded on March 8, 1962) were released in the summer of 1962 under the band name "Kenny & The Cadets" on the label "Randy", without chart success.
  • Tracks 12-20: After the success of the "Surfin '/ Luau" single, the band returned to the World Pacific studio on February 8, 1962 with Hite Morgan to record four more tracks. "Surfin 'Safari", "Surfer Girl", "Judy" and the instrumental "Beach Boy Stomp" are initially designed for two more Candix singles, but the recordings are also used by manager Murry Wilson , and the band for a few larger ones Introducing record companies, ultimately with success: Capitol Records signs the band.
