Lothar Franz Walter
Lothar Franz Walter , also Walther , (* around 1656; † April 18, 1733 in Vienna ) was an Austrian organ builder .
Life
Walter was born around 1656. On July 13, 1696, he took the citizenship oath in Vienna . On May 2, 1703, he succeeded Ferdinand Niederhauser as the “ calcant and organ maker” of the Viennese court.
He was considered to be clearly superior to his competitors for this position. In his application letter, Walter particularly emphasized his work for churches.
Walter was married. His wife died of biliary fever in 1722 at the age of 30. Of the children, his sons Johann Peter and Franz Jacob did not reach the first year of life and their daughter Anna Barbara died at the age of five. The sons Johann Jacob and Elisabeth Teresia survived their father. When he died in 1733, they were 11 and 15 years old, respectively.
The organ building tradition was continued by his journeyman Joseph Wibl and J. Leydecker, who also acted as the children's guardian. Walter was primarily known as an organ builder, but he also made other keyboard instruments. His signature was: "Walter.fecit.i703 / Viena".
